The Penguin LEO Club an Ulverstone youth group Enormity worked together in cleaning up Fairway Park in Ulverstone on Clean Up Australia Day last week. This was the first time both groups have worked together on a community project. Penguin Lions also helped out their LEO Club by picking up rubbish and cooking the sausages for their BBQ lunch which followed the clean up. The LEO's and Enormity enjoyed working together and hope this will be the start of many more joint ventures.

Flood Raiser

Penguin Lions members organised a "Flood Raiser" at the Penguin Sport & Services Club

Excellent music from Abbey Rd. An auction on the night combined with door sales to raise about $1500. This is to be matched $ for $ by state government to assist Queensland flood victims

Keeping busy

Over the past weekend, Lion Stewart McNeair was extremely busy with the Arts on Fire expo at the Penguin Community Centre, Penguin. With over 30 exhibitors to help organise and coordinate also being part of the entertainment certainly proved that you dont have to be youngster to get things done. Stewart also maned a stall at the Community Services Expo held at the same venue the previous weekend.

On Saturday 10th October members of our club participated in the Penguin Primary School Community Expo. The expo allowed the community to see what services were available in the Penguin Community, eg Lions, various church groups, fire brigade and many other paid and volunteer services. Daniel Eiszele, Wendy Brad, Noeleen Stringer, Megan Mundy and Kara Barker were photographed checking out the information on display at the Lions District promotional van.

National Tree Day at Lions Park
On Sunday, 1st August we planted fifteen (15) small trees suitable for the seaside environment. The trees were donated by Forestry Tasmania.
Following the planting there was a short working-bee for general maintenance and the removal of the ivy from Rock #2. Our clean, but no longer green, rock can be seen behind Lion Nanette in the photograph.
A BBQ and fellowship, aided by great weather, was then enjoyed by those present, a pleasing turnout of Lions and the entire Stringer family.
Contact has been made with a council representative and three dead trees have already been removed. Another working-bee will be needed in September to prepare the park for the Public BBQ in National Seniors Week.

Christmas Parade for Penguin

On Friday 4th December, the Penguin Lions were hard at work setting up, organizing and running their Annual Christmas Parade. This parade is the first one the season along the coast. There were a large number of very well prepared floats entered this year, which made the job hard for our judges, Gerry Howard, Lois Revell and Jim Rudling. The weather behaved and over a thousand people watched the floats parade along Main Street with the most popular float being Santa arriving in a four wheel drive vehicle driven by our very own Lion/Leo Louise Crawford.

Changeover Dinner

Penguin Lions & LEOs gathered at Penguin Primary School on June 27th for the annual change of office bearers.

Outgoing Presidents Stewart and Megan reported successful years for Lions and LEOs respectively, with a aft of projects completed within our community.

Incoming Presidents Wendy and Emily spoke of their hopes for the coming year.

The installation of office bearers was conducted by PDG Don Brady, with one exception - Past President Lindy Mundy installed Don as First Vice President.... a job well done all round..

Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Des Hiscutt, who regaled us with a range of jokes and stories on the way through....

One high point of the evening was the LEO Club slave auction, run by Lion/LEO Sarah. Four LEOs were sold off amid much laughter and fierce bidding, raising over $120 toward LEO members attending the MD Convention in Sydney next year. Talents on offer ranged from dog walking to household tasks, with LEO Tynelle fetching a good price because of her ironing skills!! LEO Rachel fetched the highest price, possibly because of the amount of potential she has to do anything. (Potential and capacity may differ however!)

We had the pleasure inducting new members - new Lion Frank Pearson and new LEO Dylan Smith joined our ranks... welcome to both!!

Outgoing President Stewart presented awards - Melvin Jones Fellowships were presented to Val Kerger and Nanette McNeair for long and dedicated service to Lions, Tasmanian Lions Foundation Fellowship to Noeleen Stringer for outstanding service to the club, and a Graham Pearce Award to Tim Cooper for his work in and with the LEO Club over many years.

A pleasant evening, good company and plenty of fun.....

Hay - Hay - Hay

Lion Cheryl Fuller has been busy organising hay to go to the south of Tasmania for drought relief. She has manage to round up TWENTY TRUCKLOADS of hay!! Then Cheryl co-opted husband Andrew and the soldiers of the 44th Transport Squadron to move the hay to the Sorell area.
The hay will distributed by the Lions Club of Sorell through the CWA. Picture shows a small portion of the hay being collected b the Army vehicles from Lion Toby Crawford's property at Stowport a few days ago (Toby donated 11 bales). These large bales are valued at $70 or $80 each, so the total monetary value of the donation is considerable....

Penguin Lions - Targa Tasmania Car Park

Here are Lions members Yvonne and Maureen busy collecting parking fees from Targa Tasmania competitors at Penguin the other day. Targa competitors donated over $800 for the privilege of parking their vehicles during the lunch stop.

The money will be spent in the Penguin community... Thank you Targa!!!!

Lord Adrian gets formally "dubbed"

Well, it has finally happened! A gathering on Friday 24 April 2009 saw Lion Adrian formally inducted by Des Hiscutt to formalise his becoming a "peer of the realm" now that he owns a litlle piece of Scotland....

He will now be known as

"Adrian, Lord of Lochaber"!

The function included a fine Scottish feast (included cockaleekie soup, tumbled thumps, scotch eggs, scotch fillet, cloutie pudding)
